FAQs

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about the National Survey of Young Adults:

Your address was randomly selected from all addresses in the country. Because we cannot invite all households to participate, you represent other households that were not selected.
The goal of this study is to learn about the experiences of young people as they transition into adulthood.
The National Survey of Young Adults (Grant # 15PNIJ-23-GK-02236-MUMU) is sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), part of the U.S. Department of Justice. It is being conducted by Westat, a social science research organization and New York University.
Participation involves agreeing to complete a 10-minute survey. Before they fill out the survey, the young adult will be told what is on the survey and that they can decline to participate. The young adult will receive a $20 Amazon gift card as a thank-you for completing the survey.
Have one of the persons who is eligible fill out the survey, using the access code in the letter sent to your address. Ask the other eligible young adults to call this toll free number 855-510-9465 and we will provide additional access codes to take the survey.
No – participation in voluntary. However, this study collects information which may help policymakers and ultimately may benefit young adults. That’s very important, so we hope you will want to participate.
All information obtained during this study will be treated as confidential. Your answers will be combined with responses from other study participants when writing up reports and conducting analyses. Data from this study are protected under federal statute (34 USC 10231a) meaning we cannot release your answers if we get any request from a government agency, private organization or individual. The exception is any information regarding future criminal conduct or threats of immediate harm to self or others, which can be reported. No identifying information will be included when study data are archived at the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD).
